Are you fed up with your current job? The rapid pace of globalization makes it difficult for anyone to be secure. Given this reality, can you afford to be content with someone else entrusted with my future career options? As I conducted research for Breaking Organizational Ties: How to Have a More Fulfilled Life in Your Current Job, I heard numerous complaints about bad bosses and uncaring organizations.
Although today’s job represents an uninspiring journey at work, rarely is a person willing to do something different. Many people become unhappy in their lives because they work in awful conditions. However, you can find a way to be compensated for your talents even if that means changing your environment or leaving it. This article examines how an individual can gain greater confidence in his or her ability to grow by exploring alternative strategies, even in the midst of downsizing and layoffs.
Economic Crisis
Economic troubles continue to presence a challenge to our economic future. America has lost 7.2 million jobs with the unemployment rate topping 10% since November 2009. This situation has been very problematic for black community. The unemployment rate for blacks is over 15%, with more than one in four being out of work. Companies have shed 11,000 workers from their payroll. State agencies have had to layoff or furlough workers. Millions of Americans are now waiting longer for food stamps, unemployment checks, and disability payments. Margaret Simms of the Urban Institute notes, “The length of the recession clearly has put a strain on the resources that states bring to bear.” Therefore, our lives continue to unravel as things we depend on disintegrate before our eyes.
Career Strategy
An economic crisis and an uncertain future require individuals to explore new personal strategies. For many people, happiness means more than having a job. According to a Yankelovich Monitor’s study in 1997, only 25% of adults said “a lot of money” signified success and accomplishment. Unfortunately, many individuals work in organizations that don’t stimulate their professional growth.
In my own situation, I’ve kept my primary job but created my own business venture. This decision started my professional development and gave me a competitive edge in the market.
It doesn’t necessarily mean giving up your current job. However, it does involve a different mental journey. Marsha Sinetar, author of Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow, argues that individuals rarely take the time for introspection: “Most of us think about our jobs or our careers as a means to fulfill responsibilities to families and creditors, to gain more material comforts, and to achieve status and recognition. But we pay a high price for this kind of thinking.”
Therefore, you may need to change directions. These steps include the following: (a) take a personal assessment of your current work situation; (b) determine your primary focus; (c) prepare a plan for professional development at your job; (d) decide what you need to do in order to obtain your dream job; (e) weigh the consequences of changing directions; and (f) surround yourself with a positive support system.
Conclusion
Many individuals are rethinking their career situations during this economic crisis. Blacks are not the exception. I see a sense of despair encompassing them. Yet, most people don’t know how to get out of this vicious cycle of hopelessness. Individuals should continue to sharpen their skills and never let anyone else decide their future. It appears that few managers are concerned about employee career development.
Therefore, I caution you not to get too comfortable in your jobs while the rest of the nation is going through unprecedented change. This article demonstrated that you can mobilize yourself and take control of your own situation. In fact, it’s a critical step in achieving personal fulfillment and acquiring future wealth. Through this process, you will gain the insight to develop and enhance your skills while pursuing your personal goals and dreams.

The rugby union’s professional era began in 1995, and was began by the creation of SANZAR which is a group that is a combination of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, formed with the sole purpose of selling TV broadcasting rights for tow recently established competitions: domestic super 12 and Tri-Nations, with the first Tri-Nations in 1996, with New Zealand winning all four test nation matches. 1996 marked as a special year for the All Blacks when they won the a Tri-Nations match against South Africa for the very first time, under their coach John Hart and team captain Sean Fitzpatrick. For the following two seasons, New Zealand saw mixed results from their all> clad team, winning the 1997 Tri-Nations before losing it for the first time in 1998. Even though the All Blacks team won their Tri-Nations match series in 1997, the team lost all of their five Test-Nation matches as well as the Bledisloe cup match series, which is the first time that they have lost as much since 1949.
These days, the team members are wearing all blacks jersey colored all black has an Adidas logo and the silver New Zealand Rugby Union fern out on front. The Australian tour in 1884 was the first for the New Zealand team and the team had worn a uniform that is far different from what the team jersey looks like today. The team wore a dark blue jersey back in 1884 that has a gold fern on the left of the jumper. But in 1893, the New Zealand Rugby Union held its annual meeting, stipulating in the meeting that the international team’s uniform must be all black jersey with a silver fern on the upper left side and white knickerbockers. When 1901 rolled in, the All Blacks team played New South Wales wearing a new uniform of black jersey with a canvas top that has no collar but still features the silver New Zealand Rugby Union fern.
These days, the all> and All Blacks jersey are considered to be the most recognizable of all rugby jerseys, recently, it has become a tradition for the New Zealand team to wear an embroidered poppy leaf on the sleeves of their jerseys whenever they are playing against France during the end of year tours, honoring the soldiers that have given their live in the battle fields of Europe. Richie McCaw, the team captain says that the team does it to honor the services that New Zealanders have provided overseas and added that such practices is an important part of their team and their whole country. And today, people can simply go online to order their very own All Blacks jerseys, easily available for anyone who’d like to show their appreciation and support for the world’s champion rugby football team.
During the years of 1939 through 1945, the United States of America was facing two problems concerning racial issues. First, Hitler attacked and exterminated Gypsies and Jews in Europe, and started the Second World War. The United States was fighting this “global antidiscrimination program” in Japan, Italy, and France, having joined the allies. This war was the external race problem. The second race issue was domestic and was directly related to the internal interrelationships between the whites and the blacks. While white people were only concerned with defeating Hitler and the Axis, the blacks were more preoccupied with the Double V, a concept that refers to effectively resolving both race problems, – external and internal. Thus, it was much harder for the blacks to go through the war years, because first, those in the military served in much less acceptable conditions, and secondly, those at home have endured racial discrimination nearly everywhere at home country.
The blacks have fought in nearly all American Wars, starting from the Civil War and ending with Vietnam War. The World War II was not an exception. However, racial issues in America and frictions between the whites and the blacks have been very tense at those times (because Martin Luther King, Jr. was only about 14 years old then), and the “colored people” (a widely used term back then, which was not considered offending) were not only segregated, but were purposefully left aside from the growing economy. The benefits were left for the whites. It is common knowledge that wars fed American economy, however in both civilian and military sectors blacks have experienced very tough times finding jobs. Andrew E. Kersten, a professor from the University of Wisconsin, author of the article African-Americans and the World War II, included statistical evidence of harsh job discrimination instances, such as “in Indiana [African-Americans were barred] 9,331 out of 9,979 [job openings] (94 percent).” In addition, the military sector had even more harsh attitude towards black incumbents, which were generally considered poorer soldiers. Thus, barring the multiple black vs. white bloody conflicts which commonly occurred throughout the country outside the workplace, the blacks were also discriminated and segregated within their country, and at the same time ironically, this allegedly democratic country fought racism abroad.
Fortunately, Executive Order 8802, signed by contemporary President Franklin Roosevelt, has changed the situation within the country up till now. The creation of Fair Employment Practices Committee was a turning point, where Franklin said, “I do hereby reaffirm the policy of the United States that there shall be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries or government because of race, creed, color, or national origin.” The changes in black unemployment rates (and in fact other demographic indicators such as death) have dropped immediately as the blacks migrated to the West and North for vacant jobs. However, this law alone was not enough, because the white population – employers in particular – have not been culturally and morally ready to easily hire blacks. As a result, such organizations as CORE have been created, and other organizations such as NAACP have been asked for assistance. These organizations protected civil rights and fought for equal employment rights and desegregation. Only after intrusion of such organizations as NAACP and CORE, the FEPC began to demonstrate significant change, and the blacks have finally felt the economic growth themselves, working on jobs. It is important to note that blacks have been accepted both in general jobs, and in military, which means the blacks have been fighting for the Double V fully: at home, and abroad.
The negative side of this fortunate story is that although legally the blacks could not have been pressed and discriminated, the white people needed time to accept the new policy. Blacks have worked and served military services in much poorer conditions, sometimes so dangerous that there were instances of deaths. Nonetheless, the spirit of blacks to fight for the Double V was very strong despite the failures and misfortunes. Kersten states in his article that FBI has concluded that “while cynicism was found in nearly every black community, so was the strong desire to aid the war effort.” But these differences in job conditions and the informal attitudes of the whites could not leave the war morale of the nation’s forces unaffected. Kersten writes again that, “…although most African-Americans supported the war, racism undercut the government’s efforts to build a unified nation at wartime.”
Eventually, over a million black soldiers served in WW2. Despite the difficulties, there were prominent soldiers and regiments. Unfortunately, they only received medals many years later during Clinton’s Administration.
With the support of multiple civil organizations and the legal support of the jurisdiction, the African-American population of the United States had started to win domestic half of their Double V agenda with multiple victims and blood. And on May 8th, 1945 with the defeat of fascism, the external part of this Double V agenda has also been completed. Thus, African-Americans deserve double respect for their participation in the World War II, because they were fighting two wars – at home and abroad – and won both!

The Bledisloe Cup is a Rugby Union tournament, played between the Australian Wallabies and New Zealand All Blacks since 1931, although there is some dispute regarding this. While the Australian Rugby Union is of the opinion that the first match was played as a one-off in 1931, the New Zealand Rugby Union opines that the first match was played in 1932 when New Zealand toured Australia. The cup gets its name from the man who donated the trophy – Lord Bledisloe, the Governor–General of New Zealand in 1931. The silver trophy designed by Nelson Isaac in New Zealand and crafted by Walker and Hall in London is the largest trophy in world rugby.
The Bledisloe Cup has seen frequent changes in all the years it has been played. From 1931 to1981 is was contested irregularly with New Zealand winning 19 times and Australia 4 times. Australia’s victories include their first victory on New Zealand soil. The trophy was also ‘lost’ during this period and then ‘found’ in a Melbourne storeroom. Between 1982 and 1995, the Bledisloe Cup contested every year, sometimes as a single match and sometimes in a three match series. During this period New Zealand won 11 of the 14 matches and Australia won the remaining.
1996 onwards, the Bledisloe Cup contested as part of the Tri Nations Tournament between New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in a three match series. New Zealand won the cup in 1996 and 97; Australia in 1998. From 1999 to 2005, the third match was not played.
Australia and New Zealand contested only two matches. If the series or each match ended in a draw, then the cup stayed with its current holder. This left the fans dissatisfied and hence in 2006 the third match was also played. However in 2007, the game reverted back to two match series due to the World Cup. In 2008, the Bledisloe Cup will be contested over four matches – 3 in Australia and New Zealand and one match, for the first time in another country i.e. Hong Kong. This is so as to increase awareness of this game in Asia.
You can enjoy the Bledisloe Cup this year when you visit Hong Kong in November. Make sure you reserve your hotel in Hong Kong well in advance, as you wouldn’t want to miss out on this historical sporting entertainment event just because you couldn’t get hotel accommodation in time. The Cosmo Hotel in Hong Kong accepts advance bookings throughout the year, so get your reservations as early as possible.
