The Chilean tennis player, Fernando Gonzalez, a semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2009, defeated this Monday May 24th in the first round of the Roland Garros, the Brazilian Thiago Alves with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 17 minutes. Gonzalez, who is ranked 13th in the ATP rankings, had not played a match since losing in the first round of Barcelona, against the Spanish Albert Ramos Viñolas. Some injuries left the Chilean player out of the clay-surfaced tournament. He was unable to compete in the Masters 1000 of Monte Carlo, Rome or Madrid.

The Chilean had to struggle against the Brazilian but appealed to his service as his primary weapon and even though he didn’t have a good percentage, he completed 21 aces.

Gonzalez kept his focus since the beginning of the match against Alves. With a deep drive and a powerful service, the triple Olympic medalist overturned any reaction from his opponent. He took the set comfortably after breaking in the fifth and seventh games to win 6-2.

However, Alves fought back in the second set and surprised Gonzalez, who slightly lost his effectiveness and began to make frequent mistakes in the rallies from the baseline.  By breaking the Chilean in the fourth and tenth games, Alves obtained the victory in the second set with a 4-6 and tied the match a set each.

In the third set, the Brazilian got excited and began to apply his best tennis. But “Feña” aware of his greater experience in big tournaments, as well as in the circuit, reacted in the best way and played as a top-20 player. pressed at the right moment to break Alves and obtained the victory of the third set with a 6-4.

In the deciding set, Gonzalez improved his game. He refined his shots and showed that he was willing to go in search of at least the semifinals, which he reached last year at Roland Garros. The game ended after two hours and 16 minutes when Gonzales won the set 6-4.

At the end of the match, Gonzalez seemed a little tired but grateful about the victory. It was a very tough match for the Chilean. Now he is focusing on his next game and getting into the semifinals.  We just hope that the Chilean can keep his good health and his best tennis for the following match.

With this result, the Chilean registered a 2-0 record over Alves. His first triumph over the Brazilian was accomplished in the ATP tournament held in Viña del Mar during 2007. There he won 6-2, 6-2.

Now Gonzalez is in search for a ticket to the third round. Chile´s best racket will face the winner of the match between French Arnaud Clement (world No.76) and Ukrainian Oleksandr Dolgopolov (world No. 56) on Wednesday May 26th.

Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is currently on top of the constructor’s standings in this year’s Formula One season. One reason for this is the rivalry between double world champion Fernando Alonso and rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton. While critics have been pointing out that McLaren’s call to have the two competing equally, the British Formula One team is adamant that the competition between the two world-class drivers is good for the team.

Mercedes-Benz motorsports boss Norbert Haug is unwavering in his position that McLaren Mercedes is doing the right thing concerning the way it treat its drivers. Haug said that the competition would mean that neither Alonso nor Hamilton will be able to rest on their laurels and become complacent.

“If a newspaper sends two news hounds to the paddock, then it is very likely that they do more research and will find out more than if they send someone alone,” said Haug. “We relish competition. If that remains within a sporting and fair frame, it pushes the team forwards. So I firmly believe that every team aim at having two equally strong drivers, but perhaps only half of all the teams managed to find them.”

While some critics are pointing out that the team is favoring Hamilton because he is British, Haug is quick to deny the rumor. He said that they are treating their drivers equally.

“I think you can forget about that straight away. It was even said how we reacted joyfully on Lewis’ quickest lap in Canada. Well, whoever stated that, conveniently forgot how much we cheered for Fernando being on the way to quickest lap and how disappointed we were when it did not happen,” he said. “You always follow with passion the driver who is on a hot lap. But that has nothing to do with the fact that Lewis is a Briton.”

Haug also pointed out that the double world champion is still in the process of adapting into the McLaren system but denied rumors that Hamilton has been with the team for years now. “It is completely clear that Fernando is still feeling his way into our team. On the other hand, I am quite intrigued by stories I hear about Lewis having seven or eight years of experience with the Formula One team. That is simply not true. He simply knows us quite well, that is all.”

“But why would we try to get a two-time world champion and then give him lesser material?” pointed out Haug in response to rumors saying that the team favors Hamilton. “People who know McLaren-Mercedes know that we are always fair to our drivers. If we were not, I think you would not see duels such as the one in Indianapolis.”

“I also think that the fans appreciate that. I can also understand if the media try to create some controversy about two equally strong teammates,” concluded Haug.

Alonso and Hamilton are using the same MP4-22 Formula One car with a Mercedes-Benz engine and operates as smooth as a Mercedes-Benz washer pump. Hamilton currently leads Alonso in the drivers’ standings. In eight races so far, the Briton has scored eight podium finishes, two of which are wins. Alonso also has two wins, but failed to take podium finishes in all his races this season.

Just about every time you see a golf tip on any golf broadcast or on the Golf Channel, they finish the segment with “for help with your game, go see your local PGA professional.” Unfortunately, that does not often lead to good golf instruction. The actual curriculum involved for golf professionals seeking to obtain their Class A membership only focuses a small amount on golf instruction.

While the players ability test for Class A membership is more difficult for the PGA than any other golf teaching organization, such as the United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF), or the Professional Golf Teachers Association of America (PGTAA), an instructor will probably learn just as much about teaching in these other certification programs. Furthermore, any 6 or 7 handicap golfer can ultimately pass the PGA players ability test. I know of some professionals who failed the test over a dozen times before passing.

It is by luck alone that most good instructors become good instructors. They have to be lucky enough to work for a golf professional who is also a good instructor. PGA members do have the benefit of attending PGA sponsored teaching seminars from time to time. They are required to attend seminars of different types in order to obtain continuing education credits.

So, how does the golf student find a good golf instructor? Well, it requires some research. Some professionals develop a reputation over many years in the business. As a result, much of their business comes from referrals. The best referrals are from the best golfers. Therefore, it is a good idea to approach some of the better golfers at the golf courses where you play to get a referral.

The internet also plays a role. Professionals who focus on instruction will often have a website that helps them with generating business. Review some of the websites of professionals in your area and try to get the answers to a few questions, such as:

What kind of playing record do they have? While it is not necessary to be a great player to be a great teacher, the better teachers tend to be very good golfers in their own right. A good golfer will be able to demonstrate a variety of shots.

Where have they learned how to teach? Have they worked with any top instructors? As I mentioned, in most cases, it is just luck that an instructor learned how to teach from another good instructor. However, some of the top teaching professionals also have instructor certification programs in place. David Leadbetter, Hank Haney, Jim McLean and Jim Hardy all have such programs of varying types.

How many years has an instructor been teaching? How long has the instructor played competitive golf, if at all? Adding up all of the combined experience of an instructor is important. For instance, some instructors may have a short teaching career to date, but may have had a long competitive experience. Also, other life experiences may play a role in how well an instructor can teach. Exposure to teachers in other sports or activities such as the martial arts can help develop the style of a golf instructor.

Once you have narrowed down your choices, it’s a good idea to give each instructor a call. A brief phone conversation should give you an indication of how passionate the instructor is about teaching, and how well they communicate. The best instructors are those who are passionate about the game, and who know how to communicate their knowledge to anyone.

With all this in mind, the next time you think about getting some golf instruction, do a little research. You will find that it is time well spent, and your golf game will be sure to benefit. Also, remember, just like in any other business, the best instructors tend to be more expensive than their competitors. But, if you really want to improve, you are better off spending a little extra money.
