The majority of rugby league memorabilia is in paper form and subject to rapid deterioration. What are the best ways to preserve the integrity and protect these documents for years to come?
The growing sport of rugby hit a snag in 1890 with the split of the Rugby Union. Much of the remaining rugby league memorabilia of that era consists of handbills, artist renderings of events, and photos with the athletes’ signatures. The turn of the 20th century was one of the busiest times in rugby history.
In 1888, the England rugby team toured Australia creating interest there, and in 1892, the New Zealand Rugby Football Union was formed. People of that time were very perceptive to realize the importance of keeping articles relating to their beloved sport, and we have a rich pool of signed football memorabilia to draw from to appreciate the sport.
Because so many of the remaining items from the early days of rugby consist of paper, proper preservation is a top priority. Occasionally, loose and unprotected documents in fair condition are discovered in trunks and closets, but most often, they are almost unrecognizable.
Unsigned finds in good condition are a treasure to the collector, but anything that has a genuine signature is like gold. If you have the good fortune to get your hands on signed football memorabilia, be sure to take immediate means to protect it. Touching such fragile documents with your hands will quickly lead to their deterioration.
Oils from your body transfer easily to papers you handle, which leads to stains and causes old paper to break down. Use light cotton gloves to handle your documents until you can get them properly preserved. Signed football memorabilia, like any other old papers, reacts adversely to the acid in paper.
Temporarily store your papers by placing them between acid-free sheets of tissue or paper. Do not lay anything heavy on them. The sooner you can seal them from the atmospheric conditions, the better the chances for their longevity. Understand that under the best of conditions, documents that have been exposed for many years will not last forever.
It is highly recommended that you scan your rugby league memorabilia papers so you can transcribe them from copies rather than the original, and this will also ensure that the information and appearance of such items can be preserved even if the document itself becomes illegible or deteriorates beyond recognition.
Depending on the condition your signed football memorabilia is in, there may be folds and creases that make preservation more difficult. Carefully unfold and flatten the pages and do not refold them. When scanning, do not lay the lid of the scanner on top of them, but cover with a dark paper to reduce the chances of damage.
Many collectors prefer to laminate their documents after scanning to seal them from the air using a high quality lamination product. This works much better in the long run than just placing the collectibles behind glass. Glass also has a tendency to stick to the paper due to changes in humidity.
Any signed football memorabilia will definitely be valuable at some point, if it is not already. Be sure to follow these steps to preserve your rugby league memorabilia.

It was a weekend feast, but not the type that pricks the ears and tingles the taste buds of Josh Perry or Danny Wicks. There were no doughnuts in sight. Especially not on the scoreboards where it was all big numbers and high scoring matches courtesy of an avalanche of soft tries.
On average there were 51 points scored per game. Effective tackles were as hard to find as a former league winger in a Wallabies‘ jersey.
Contributing significantly to the stats was the Rabbitohs‘ ‘effort’ against the Tigers. Gordon Tallis is coaching the forwards at Redfern these days and he’s clearly managed to turn things around – they used to be good, and now they’re not. In Souths’ defence though… well there was none to be honest.
The Panthers and Eels traded tries for eighty minutes in a game of anything-you-can-do-we-can-do-better… until you do it better again… and then we do it better.. and then you… and then us… and then you again… and then… the game’s over? Oh well you win.
In a weekend that saw 63 tries scored the Sharks came up with one of them against the Cowboys; coincidentally the same number of players they had sacked for an alcohol-related misdemeanour. To be fair, this ratio was a slight improvement on some earlier times in the year.
In Melbourne the Knights couldn’t come up with a victory over the Storm despite having approximately 100 per cent of the possession and field position. If the southerners ever had the ball I must’ve been blinking. Surely only the rain concealed the Newcastle players’ tears at the end of this one.
The Raiders held on to beat the Titans, though if the game had lasted five more minutes the Gold Coast boys might have won by 13+ at the margins. The Blues’ selectors look set to continue the ‘one Raider at a time’ policy by picking Learoyd-Lahrs and dropping Monaghan after the latter replaced Campese in game two. Next year should see Tongue get his chance before being inevitably dropped with Monaghan and Campese earning recalls… only to be dropped.
On Friday night the Roosters got back into the swing of things with another loss against the Dragons. Of course, the fact that they got thrashed, stayed rooted to the bottom rung of the ladder, and were confirmed as the worst performing bunch of rep players in the game’s history wasn’t great news, but the fact that they had to witness a Wendell Sailor try celebration really was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
The Broncos had a good win over the Warriors due to the game not being played in New Zealand. Lillyman’s arm and Ropati’s head showed that secret rendezvous’ with internet lady friends is not the only thing capable of dazzling big Joel Clinton. And Tonie Carroll made a successful comeback at the ripe old age of really bloody old. Pick him and Sailor for State of Origin III and bring back Alfie – give the Blues a chance.

Rugby fans have been waiting a long time for a Rugby game to released on the Wii. Developer Sidhe Interactive has made the Rugby games famous with the Playstation 2 crowd. And now for the first time on the Nintendo Wii!
What should we expect from this game?
* More teams then previous games (From 50 teams to 80 teams)
* Eight-player multiplayer
* A new formation tactics system
The new Rugby League 3 expands it’s team roster to 80 teams, included Australian, Welsh, English, French and New Zealand leagues. It is a little disappointing that this game is released during the 2010 season, while the teams consist of the 2009 teams.
Although the game has many new features, like a new team and player formation system. Which allows you to shuffle players, skills and stats to build your own exclusive team!
The gameplay of this game is split in two categories:
* Match Play
This gameplay is for gamers who like action and want to toss the ball. It consists of Single player and Competition modes.
* Playing and Coaching
Playing and Coaching is for gamers who would like to stand in the shoes of a coach or team captain to lead your own team to glory
The Controls
* Hold Your Wii remote sideways and walk with the D pad.
* You can also play with the old Gamecube remote, I personally think this is the best option, since you then have the most control to pass and throw.
If you want to see more of this game? Play it as a backup game. To do so you have to Unlock Your Nintendo Wii console. By unlocking Your Wii you will enjoy all the benefits, so try it out now!
As the Tri Nations 2009 draws to an end, Functional Strength Training is proving to be a key deciding factor in the game of Rugby.By Johann Tambayahwww.StrengthTrainingChronicles.com It is almost the end of the annual Tri Nations series and the Springboks (South Africa) are on route to win the series. The Tri Nations sees the world’s heavy weights in rugby union take each other on in a series of Test matches. The past decade has seen Rugby Union being dominated by the three Southern Hemisphere heavy weights – Australia (the Wallabies), South Africa (the Springboks) and New Zealand (the All Blacks) up until England’s world cup victory in 2003 with all credit given to Jonny Wilkinson. This year’s Tri Nations has seen New Zealand retain the Bledisloe cup (the coveted cup between Australia and New Zealand) however the series win itself is possibly going to be in the hands of the Springboks.Rugby Union is a full-contact physical game. In most cases there is no use of padding whatsoever and it’s only in the recent years that we have seen mouth guards being used. Head padding is becoming more popular given the notorious reputation Rugby players have of owning a pair of ‘cauliflower ears’ (The term use to describe repaired ears after the surgeons have done some work on them). Adding to the nature of the game, players tend to adorn metallic studded boots. Attempting to tackle a player from behind while chasing often tends to put one at risk of tooth-to-metal impact.The game is about possession and territory. The ball is never to be lost to the opposing team and you work hard to gain territory as you advance. The strategies used are very similar to combat movements. Advancements are physical and brutal. They involve using brute force to break through the opposing team’s defenses without being grounded. ‘Grounded’ is being tackled and often involves being thrown to the floor. It stands to no surprise that most levels of Rugby require the presence of paramedics.The physical war like nature of the game has meant that players must prepare themselves for combat and become warriors. This is part and parcel of what made Jonah Lomu and David Campese such try-making machines in the past. England players vividly remember the time Jonah broke through waves of defense before scoring five tries against them in the 1995 world cup. Whilst Campo (David Campese) is likely to spend most of his time in his rugby shop at the Rocks in Sydney dreaming of the days he pummeled through the All Black defenses.As strength training was critical to Gladiators in the days of ancient Rome, so is strength training critical in this full-contact physical sport. A look at the South African team in the Tri Nations 2009 reveals how a strong team is able to pummel its way to victory. The Springbok forwards were unstoppable. There defenses impenetrable. There attacks – in waves of tsunami.Traditional Rugby Strength training has revolved around keeping players’ legs strong and thick. This meant hours of training on squatting and hack squat machines. The aim of this was to build up leg strength for the players as this would be pivotal in ploughing forward on the field; particularly in the scrum and mauls. However, the world of strength training itself has changed dramatically and functional strength training is now critical to dominate the game. A look at Jerry Collins’ arms reveals very clearly that he doesn’t necessarily only squat at the gym!Functional strength training is what differentiates a mediocre rugby player from a warrior.Functional strength training addresses every single movement used in the game of rugby and strength training for it. For example players need to build there strength to address the scrum (varying positions), mauls, charging, tackling, handing off, the line out and explosive bursts of energy. Functional strength training involves taking every aspect of the game and breaking it down into manageable units; e.g. the line out – Players need to build strong shoulders / deltoid muscles as well as strong quads and hams to address this movement. This movement could be strengthened using exercises such as Barbell Thrusters. Handing off opponents involves the use of triceps, shoulders, the chest and back muscles. These individual muscle groups need to be strengthened.Traditional workout routines for rugby involved focusing on the legs only and other non-targeted routines which seriously short changed players who are in essence going out to war. Military personnel are beginning to realize these changes and are training there soldiers in preparation for varying combat situations e.g. strength training for urban combat is different to jungle combat. You cannot be just physically fit any longer but one needs to be functionally strong and fit. For example urban combat requires soldiers to be able to lift rubble and pieces of concrete, climb up stairs with heavy gear on their backs, pull themselves up walls, etc.Functional strength training for Rugby involves targeted strategic attacks on muscle groups and provides a decisive action plan to strengthen functional elements of the game.
