Many people have died during this event. Maggie Thatcher’s son caused consternation in Britain some years ago by getting lost while participating. Broken bones are quite common every time the event is held. I’m talking about the Dakar Rally, which was famously known as the Paris-Dakar.
They say that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Well, the Dakar Rally is probably the best way of checking out how tough you are by battling and overcoming tough, inhospitable terrain – not for just a day, but over a fortnight. The event came into existence when the founder Thierry Sabine, while participating in a race, got lost in the desert and hit upon the idea of holding a regular rally.
Originally, the cars, bikes and trucks started from Paris, France, to Dakar in Senegal but varying political situations in the countries the rally passes through has meant the route has changed several times. Because the Dakar Rally terrain is a superb natural testing ground, many manufacturers like Land Rover, Toyota, Mercedes and Pinzgauer, as well as Citroen and even Porsche have chosen to participate. Nissan and Mitsubishi also take the rally very seriously indeed.
In fact, 2008 will see Mitsubishi defending its 8 consecutive victories in what has been acknowledged as the toughest endurance race on the planet. The 2008 event is being looked upon as a source of technical feedback from the 2008 Dakar Pajero Evolution in terms of durability and endurance as this will influence the all-new range of high performance clean diesel engines slated for 2009.
Mitsubishi’s chief rival manufacturer is Volkswagen, and the German team has readied its Tdi-powered Race Touareg 2s. VW will field four cars but Jutta Kleinschmidt, the first woman to have won the Dakar Rally (in a VW) will not be with them. VW is hoping to become the first manufacturer to win the Dakar with Diesel power, just like sister company Audi has done at Le Mans for the past two years. The route for the 2008 Dakar Rally is 9,273km long, of which 5,736km will be treacherous special stages. The rally starts in Lisbon on the 5th of January and is scheduled to reach Dakar on the 20th of January after wending its way through Spain, Morocco & Mauritania.
Narain’s flawless performance should remind those who’ve have cast him aside that he’s still very much a force to be reckoned with on the world motorsport stage. In all fairness though, he was a little lucky to inherit first position when Neel Jani of Switzerland, who was leading comfortably, had trouble in the pits. But, more often than not, you need lady luck in your corner in order to win a race. Narain, on his part, put in quick laps when it counted, and set one fastest lap after another to secure his position.
During the closing stages of the race, Narain also soaked up an enormous amount of pressure from Jonny Reid of New Zealand to finish the 45-lap feature race just half a second ahead – his first major win since his Formula 3 days in the UK several years ago. Having proven that he still has the ability to win, Narain feels he’s due another shot at F1.
At the end of the day, this is a great win for team India. It’s sure to be a huge morale booster for a team that is still developing and getting better all the time – hopefully it’s also sign of many more wins to come. On the whole, you’ve got to say, it’s looking relatively good for the Indian racing scene at the moment.

Audi Motorsport team has successfully qualified in the recent American Le Mans Series (ALMS) race held at the St. Petersburg circuit in Florida. At the beginning of the race, defending champion Allan McNish set the pace aboard the Audi R10 TDI with 650 horsepower. Unfortunately, he finished the qualifying race only grabbing the third spot, as two Acura LM P2 sports cars throttled enough to get the first and second spot.
But then again, the qualifying race in St. Petersburg circuit is a success for Audi Motorsport. Here are some comments from team heads and drivers.
Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport: “The qualifying results proved our computer calculations: On this track and with the current regulations, the LM P2 cars are just in a better position. Despite this and with a lot of effort, Allan (McNish) tried to get on to the front row. If you take maximum risk, it can happen that you spin. Fortunately there is not much damage to the car.”
Dave Maraj (Team Director Audi Sport North America): “Qualifying was better than I’d expected and our two Audis are closer to the Porsches than I’d predicted with the #1 Audi just three-tenth’s off pole-position. As to what kind of speed the LM P2 class Porsches can run in the race compared to us we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Allan McNish (aboard the Audi R10 TDI with VW tie rods): “I pushed to the absolute maximum and unfortunately pushed a little too hard resulting in me hitting the wall exiting Turn 9 after trying to carry too much speed through. Porsche had taken away my provisional pole position and I wanted it back. A good qualifying position was vital to get here and now the other battle occurs in the race. I don’t know how it’s going to work out for us with many different strategies being applied but we’ve found a good set-up for our car.”
Dindo Capello (Audi R10 TDI #1): “It’s going to be the toughest race to date for the Audi R10 TDI. Allan showed in qualifying that we have good speed and now we must try to reproduce that pace in the race for 2 hours and 45 minutes. I believe that this will be difficult for us to achieve compared to the lighter and more agile LM P2 cars. Turns 5 to 8 especially hurt our heavier car. But the times we have achieved are better than we anticipated, especially after walking the circuit yesterday.”
Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #2): “The St. Petersburg event is really good and the race track very well built. Although our R10 TDI is a car which likes fast straight lines more than tight corners it’s nice to share this event with the IndyCar Series. Marco did a good lap in qualifying. We have a different tyre choice than the other car. Practice time was short, so we still have to improve the set-up a little bit. But I think the condition of our car is better than our position shows in qualifying. The race is long, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2): “Things did not go too bad today. We improved from session to session — even by a full second from the last practice to qualifying. The lap was good, the time also. But the starting position obviously is not perfect. Going into the race from seventh position means you are in the middle of the pack. It would have been nicer to start further towards the front. But more was not possible today for me. You have seen also with Allan that we are driving right on the edge.”
After gaining a one-two finish at the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in St. Petersburg, Florida, Audi Motorsport team went on to European coasts of France to compete in the Hours of Le Mans happening on June 16 and 17.
After the race in France, the team, especially the drivers will only have exactly three days of preparation including the test drive for the two Audi R10 TDI race cars for the upcoming ALMS race in Long Beach, California and in Houston, Texas. Audi drivers have conducted test drives at Long Beach to that only lasts for 1 hour and 40 minutes. The drivers have also spent 45 minutes of practice to familiarize themselves in the Long Beach race track.
Here is what the Audi Motorsport team has to say about their preparation for the ALMS race in Long Beach and Houston:
Dindo Capello (Audi R10 TDI #1): “I can’t say much about Long Beach because I’ve never been there. It’ll be a very short race over just 100 minutes. I was told that there’s a very tight hairpin. This should be pretty difficult for our — due to the regulations — heavy R10 TDI, although we showed in St. Petersburg that we can win even when the theory is against us. This was also the case with the R8 last year in Houston. This track is a lot bumpier than the one in St. Petersburg. The key in Houston will be to find a good set-up for handling the bumps.”
Allan McNish (aboard Audi R10 TDI #1 with VW tune up parts): “The St. Petersburg victory certainly gave us a bit more confidence looking ahead at the next two races. However, it is cautious optimism, simply because I think the competition did not get everything one-hundred-percent right in St. Petersburg, while we did. Looking at Long Beach, this is a fantastic venue, very historic and probably with a good balance of tight corners and straights. Houston is significantly different, very tight, twisty, with no long straights where our Audi R10 TDI can stretch its legs. The competition from Porsche and Acura/Honda will be very strong. However, after the victory in St. Petersburg, we’re looking forward to this challenge.”
Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #2): “Long Beach is another street event and thus another less than perfect one for the Audi R10 TDI. We proved in St. Petersburg that even if the odds aren’t in our favour on a street circuit we can turn them around. So I look at Long Beach with some optimism, but we shouldn’t forget that our car is built for high speed and fast corners and not for street races. So far, though, we’re looking good and will try to double the East Coast results on the West Coast.”
Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2): “Long Beach and Houston are new territory for me — I don’t know either of these circuits. The Audi R8 competed in Houston before, but the R10 TDI is in for two new tracks. Nevertheless, we’re going to this race with a slightly better feeling than to St. Petersburg because, there, things went better for us than expected. The Audi R10 TDI proved that it’s a reliable car on street circuits as well. If we don’t make any mistakes — which is easier said than done on a city circuit — we’ll be able to achieve a good result.”
Dave Maraj, Team Director Audi Sport North America: “I don’t want the St. Petersburg victory to make our team overly confident. We have to work as hard as we did to win in St. Petersburg. Going into the next street races, I’ll make sure that we invest the same level of work and attitude we did in St. Petersburg.”
Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport: “The Audi R10 TDI has now been undefeated in ten races, and for more than a year — that’s a unique track record. We’re aware of the fact that this string of exploits will end at some point, particularly since the competition in the American Le Mans Series keeps getting stronger. But we’re going to give our best again in the upcoming two city races in Long Beach and Houston, and show the capabilities of the R10 with Audi TDI Power to the spectators in California and Texas.”
